Face-to-Face Workshops in Research Skills and Clinical Teaching

On Friday 10 July 2026 the Institute delivered two intensive face-to-face workshops to senior medical students at New Vision University, Tbilisi, Georgia — one on the principles of statistics in modern medicine and the route to publication, and one on designing and delivering a small-group tutorial. Every participating student received named Certificates of Completion.

Each workshop ran for two hours in a face-to-face, small-group format, combining short expert exposition with structured practical exercises, worked examples and live discussion.

Principles of Designing and Delivering a Small-Group Tutorial

An applied introduction to clinical teaching: planning, structuring and delivering an effective small-group tutorial, aligned to the General Medical Council's Generic professional capabilities framework, Domain 8 — capabilities in education and training.

Interpret the core statistical measures encountered in the clinical literature — p-values, confidence intervals, relative and absolute risk, and number needed to treat — and explain their limitations.

Match common study designs to appropriate statistical approaches, and recognise the principal sources of bias and confounding.

Appraise a published paper critically, distinguishing statistical significance from clinical importance.

Plan the route from student project to publication — selecting a target journal, structuring a manuscript, and navigating peer review as an early-career author.

Designing and delivering a small-group tutorial

Write clear, assessable learning objectives and construct a session plan with a defined opening, body and close.

Select and apply small-group techniques — questioning, snowballing, think-pair-share and case discussion — appropriate to the objective.

Give and receive structured feedback, and use it to iterate the teaching session.

Evaluate a tutorial against the GMC Generic professional capabilities framework, Domain 8, and evidence teaching activity for a clinical portfolio.
Recognition

Named Certificates of Completion — issued to every participant

Each participating student received two individually named Certificates of Completion — one for each workshop — signed by the course lead. Certificates of this kind form documented, verifiable evidence of teaching and scholarly activity of the sort that UK and international selection panels score.
